Historical Development

1963

A few far sighted Ethiopians, concerned about the high maternal and infant mortality rate and rapid population growth, and who realized the eminent necessity of family planning for society’s wellbeing took the initiatives to establish a volunteer based institution and got together in 1963.

1966

Establishment of Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia with the financial assistance from Pathfinder International to provide information, counseling and clinical service to those in need of the service.

 

1966

The first family planning clinic established in Addis Ababa, located in the former premises of St Paul’s Hospital.

1970
The Association was registered as an associate member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), the leading federation engaged in the promotion of family planning services throughout the world.


1972

With the financial support of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), FGAE opened the 1st Branch Office and its second clinic in Asmara followed by the establishment of three satellite sites in Wollega, Wollo and Arsi.

1974

The turning point in the history of the Association came when FGAE was officially registered with the then Ministry of Interior, public Security Department, as a non-governmental, non-profit voluntary organization.
