FGAE Overview
The Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia (FGAE) is a volunteer-based Association established in 1966. It is a well-known organization and pioneered Family Planning (FP) program in the country and tested different innovative approaches (including youth-friendly services, community and workplace-based distribution of contraceptives). It primarily targets under-served and marginalized segments of the population. Currently, it is registered as an Ethiopian Residents Charity Organization (under certificate number 0475), and is also an accredited member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). Furthermore, FGAE is locally a member of the Consortium of Christian Relief and Development Associations (CCRDA); Consortium of Reproductive Health Associations (CORHA) and the Consortium of Population, Health and Environment (COPHE).
Over the last five decades, FGAE’s services have expanded from a single-room clinic run by one nurse to a network of 46 integrated SRH service delivery facilities including one MCH Center, seven higher, 14 Medium and 10 Confidential (Sex-workers Friendly) SRH Clinics; 15 youth centers, more than 200 outreach sites and 478 franchised clinics operating in almost all regions of the country coordinated and managed by eight Area Offices throughout the country. The Association has 713 employees and more than 8,000 program and policy volunteers. The SRH context is fast changing amidst the volatile socio-economic dynamics in the world today. Key issues include access to services, gender inequality and service quality, among others.
FGAE has now developed its seventh SP (2021-2025). The new SP is tuned to SDGs especially with indicators 3.4, 3.5, and target 5 as well as target 11 (global partnership)
The SP is aligned with most national strategies including HSTP II. Its resource requirement amounts to 2.7 Billion ETB, and envisages to access needy clients with over 30 million SRH services. As part of sustainability, the Association planned to leverage 945 million ETB local income. In the new SP, volunteers are conceived pivotal in resource mobilization. As a whole, the new SP is abreast with technological advances underscoring automation and system digitization
Consortium approach is endorsed as a new avenue of service delivery
