FGAE has launched a humanitarian project worth 44 million ETB and Delivered 3.5 million support to IDPs
The resources for these projects were obtained from USAID, IPPF, Danish FP, UK/FCDO- WISH, and Chinese FPA. This timely response is a glimpse of hope to the humanitarian and emergency situations in Amhara, Afar, and Metekel. The project, first of its kind, is anticipated to help rehabilitation of IDPs and recuperate health service provision in these areas.
The event occurred at Hilton Addis with the presence of H.E Dr. Dereje Duguma State Minster of Health, FMoH who gave an opening remark. Senior officials present in the event also include Dr. Meseret Zelalem, Director of MNCH Directorate & Mr Fekedu Yadeta, Program Wing Head at the Ministry as well as deputy their regional counterparts from Afar and Amhara HBs. Also, donor partners like Dr Marco Gerritsen from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands (EKN), Mr Kassahun Murmu from Packard Foundation, delegate of Amref Health Africa and a representative of IPPF. Likewise, delegate of the Diaspora, Executive Director of CORHA and Dr. Aster Teshome, Executive Board of EMWA attended the event. A total of 45 individuals showed up at this special event. Moreover, Dr Wondessen Assefa, President of FGAE and Mrs. Betelehem and Mr Getachew Habtie, Executive Director of FGAE along with his SMT members and Team Leaders.
Two key presentations were made by Dr. Meseret and Mr Getachew on the efforts so far & restoration plan of the Ministry and conflict inflicted damage & response of FGAE to the crisis, respectively. Discussions were made on issues raised by several of the participants following the presentations. As part of the occasion, a handover ceremony has been made whereby 3 million ETB and 1 million in-kind items worth 2 million ETB were granted to the Amhara region. And 500 thousand ETB worth edible flour has been offered to the representative of Metekel zone, Benshangul-Gumuz.
At the beginning of the event, Dr. Wondosen Assefa, President of FGAE, sincerely welcomed all invited guests. Then, he mentioned what FGAE has been contributing towards health sector in the improvement of maternal and child health services enriched with in the last 56 years of service delivery. He was stated that all the success and achievements of FGAE were happen with the continuous support of FMOH and other partners organizations. Having said that he warmly invited H.E Dr. Dereje Duguma to deliver his opening remark.
Dr. Dereje Duguma was begun his speech in recognition of FGAE’s contribution exerted in the improvement of maternal and child health and for the prevention of HIV/AIDS intervention for more than five decades. He was also admired FGAE for its extensive strategic partnership and collaboration with public private partnership in the overall health services engagement that the Association envisage with.
In connection with the humanitarian response actions, he boldly thanked again FGAE’s staffs and leadership for their extra determination and commitment shown in the mobilization of over 44 million worth projects which would be implemented for the restoration of the health facilities destroyed in IDPs sites in Amara region. And, he acknowledged FGAE for the 3.5 million worth cash and in-kind donations delivered to Amhara and Metekel zone in Benshangul.
Finally, he pointed out that FGAE’s humanitarian intervention could be a model to other similar actors working in health section. On behalf of FMoH, he was also called upon partners to pay attention in the humanitarian tasks and promised to encourage them as well.
As to the presentations Dr. Meseret Zelalem had flashed her slides to the participants to make aware of facility restoration plan of FMoH. Likewise, Ato Getachew Habtie Executive Director of FGAE demonstrated his detailed presentation revealing the multi-process steps that FGAE have gone through to the realization of humanitarian and emergency projects.
