Established in 1966, FGAE has grown from its first clinic in Addis Ababa to a nationwide network, providing quality family planning and reproductive health services to underserved communities across Ethiopia.

Historical Development
Over 50 Years of Advocacy and Impact
Founded in 1966, FGAE is Ethiopia’s leading organization for sexual and reproductive health. We provide family planning and SRH services nationwide, focusing on underserved communities with quality, inclusive care and education.
Initiative to promote family planning
A few far sighted Ethiopians, concerned about the high maternal and infant mortality rate and rapid population growth, and who realized the eminent necessity of family planning for society’s wellbeing took the initiatives to establish a volunteer based institution and got together in 1963.


FGAE established with Pathfinder support
Establishment of Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia with the financial assistance from Pathfinder International to provide information, counseling and clinical service to those in need of the service.
The first family planning clinic established in Addis Ababa, located in the former premises of St Paul’s Hospital.
Became IPPF associate member
The Association was registered as an associate member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), the leading federation engaged in the promotion of family planning services throughout the world.


First branch and satellite clinics opened
With the financial support of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), FGAE opened the 1st Branch Office and its second clinic in Asmara followed by the establishment of three satellite sites in Wollega, Wollo and Arsi.
Official NGO registration
The turning point in the history of the Association came when FGAE was officially registered with the then Ministry of Interior, public Security Department, as a non-governmental, non-profit voluntary organization.
